RAAC crisis and temporary healthcare facilities

RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) has become a nationwide crisis, with many high-ranking government members and agencies, such as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), raising concerns about the safety of RAAC panels. Hospitals across the country face the problem of tackling RAAC panels without leaving patients stranded and creating an even bigger backlog of treatment which has been increasing since COVID-19.

Why is RAAC dangerous?

Most impacted buildings were built between the 1950s and 1990s, meaning the panels used are beyond their intended lifespan and can suddenly fail and collapse. This poses a significant risk to anyone in these buildings. With hospitals being at near-full capacity, one failure could be fatal to thousands.

There have been some recent failings in schools where the structural beams have collapsed. An investigation into RAAC has shown that moisture can seep into the beams, causing rust and decay, which significantly weakens the structures. Once this happens, the material is prone to sudden failure.

How can Star Live help?

Our extensive expertise in delivering temporary structures is evident through our exceptional track record of delivering top quality and unparalleled customer service, showcased in our impressive portfolio.

We design and build a wide range of temporary structures, from pop-up hospitals to temporary gyms. Every client’s needs and requirements are different, which is why all of our structures are bespoke, so we can offer a range of features which suit your temporary healthcare facility.

An example of a temporary healthcare facility we built was a semi-permanent vaccination centre in Leeds for the NHS. This centre was built to run seven days a week and extended to 1,900m2 to help meet the huge demand and footfall. We designed and crafted the space to give the NHS a long-term solution that could be delivered within a few weeks to help them start vaccinating as soon as possible.

For us, being able to get structures designed, delivered and built quickly is crucial. We know how important it is to our clients, especially those looking for a healthcare structure because you don’t want to leave patients stranded.

Star Live specialises in comprehensive project management, customising solutions to perfectly align with each project's distinct needs.
