Temporary spaces: What are they, and how can they help you?

In a world characterised by constant change and dynamic lifestyles, the concept of space has transcended its traditional boundaries. As the way we live evolves, so does our need for versatile environments that adapt to our changing needs. We explore the benefits and importance of temporary spaces in today’s world

What are temporary spaces?

Temporary spaces or spaces can often be referred to as temporary demountable structures, a structure or space designed and built to be used for a short period instead of permanent use. Temporary spaces can be used for almost everything, from classrooms to brand activations to gyms, making them extremely versatile and useful in the modern world. Recently, there has been a growing trend in using temporary spaces, with more companies shifting their focus to the environmental impact of new builds and their budget restrictions, with temporary spaces fulfilling these requirements.

Sustainable

Temporary spaces are often rapidly deployable, meaning they take up less time and fewer resources than a permanent build, creating a much cleaner environment. Most permanent builds require lots of concrete and cement, which generate massive amounts of carbon dioxide. In 2021, it was estimated that cement production generated around 8% of the global total, around 2.5 billion tonnes. In 2023, cement production was named the third-highest producer of man-made carbon dioxide. Temporary spaces are often built and installed without concrete, making them much more environmentally friendly than permanent structures.

They can often be used more than once as the whole structure or taken apart to be reused. The best example is Starbox, a modular structure that can be used to create almost any structure, with almost endless interior customisation. Starbox provides adaptable structures that are ideal for various applications such as brand experiences, hospitality, activations, temporary spaces during refurbishments, classrooms, accommodation, or health facilities.

Flexible and customisable

As the temporary space will be uniquely yours, it can be customised to meet your specifications, depending on the structure's purpose, from your brand name and logo to snow-loading walls and ceilings to a fully customised interior. Each add-on to our event structures is designed to enhance the experience and always ensure safety. For instance, a temporary gym set up in England would require a roof designed for snow load, guaranteeing patron safety during winter months. On the other hand, a structure intended for a brand activation would focus on impactful branding and elements to resonate with attendees. Such details are crucial—they not only convey the essence of the brand but also create an engaging and unforgettable experience for those present.

Flexibility is also an important feature of temporary spaces. As mentioned, they can be used for and tailored to various applications. Without the need to customise structures specifically for each space they can be designed, deployed and relocated with the minimum of fuss and far more efficiently than a permanent structure.

Cost-effective and reusable

One of the biggest advantages of temporary spaces over permanent structures is their cost-effectiveness. You’ll only have to pay for the time you are actually using it, whereas you will have to pay all year round for a permanent structure.

Need a structure for an annual or seasonal event?  Temporary and demountable structures can easily be stored away between uses, or demounted and transported to another location and used there, making them much more cost-effective, and opening up a range of possibilities not offered by permanent buildings.

Whether launching pop-up brand activations or needing a temporary classroom, temporary spaces can help you. By navigating the challenges and harnessing the solutions, organisations can unlock the full potential of temporary spaces, fostering innovation, creativity, and efficiency in the ever-changing landscape of today's world.
