Bespoke ground support for a 360o immersive experience
Star Live was commissioned by Bild Studios to design and deliver the ground support system for: Our Story with David Attenborough, a 360° immersive installation staged in the Jerwood Gallery at the Natural History Museum. Running from June 2025, the production was expected to welcome more than 150,000 visitors within 6 months, making it one of the cultural highlights of the year.
Meeting the challenge
The brief required an overhead rigging solution for video, lighting and audio equipment, delivered without invasive fixings in a Grade I listed Victorian gallery. Access was tightly controlled, heavy plant machinery could not be used, and all infrastructure needed to be installed manually within narrow tolerances.
Within the constraints of the Jerwood Gallery’s historic fabric, the immersive environment was achieved through a projection-based system mounted on freestanding, low-impact supports—delivering seamless 360° visuals and sound while preserving the integrity of the Victorian architecture.
Our solution
Star Live designed and installed a freestanding aluminium truss system to support the projection and sound equipment, with vertical perimeter truss columns enabling full scenic integration, calculating that all vertical loads remain within the permissible floor bearing. Despite the manual build restrictions, the installation was completed within a four-day build schedule, ensuring the production opened on time for its public run.
Close collaboration between Star Live, Bild Studios and the museum team ensured every element balanced the technical requirements of the immersive show with the conservation needs of a historic space.
The Impact
The installation transformed the Jerwood Gallery into a fully immersive storytelling environment, allowing visitors to experience David Attenborough’s narrative within a seamless 360° projection space. By combining precision engineering with heritage sensitivity, Star Live enabled a cutting-edge production that was projected to engage more than 150,000 visitors while preserving one of the Natural History Museum’s most historic spaces.
